Is Meditation Important?

Meditation to the Rescue

Cluttered Brain: I threw the recycling bin’s contents into my compost heap  Meditation, I really need it ….

Ah, a few weeks back at school and there’s me thinking I’ve got the routine sussed again.  How wrong can I be!  Very wrong it turns out this morning…. One bonus of being single is that I always know who’s going to put the bins out.  And this morning, yours truly decided she would empty the indoor bins into their respective outdoor bins before the children came down for breakfast.

So, wellies on bare feet, woolly jumper donned over nightie, and out I traipsed into the mizzle of a damp East Anglian morning to where I keep my bins … and my compost bins.

Uugghh … My foggy and chaotic thoughts took me straight to the compost bin where I keep all my grass cuttings and left-over vegetable waste, and soon it was complemented by plastic bottles, tins, bottle tops and snotty tissues. With the flip of an elbow, my quick skip to the bins had turned into a 15 minute retrieval exercise. Followed by being covered in gooey stuff (decomposing slugs) over the top of my woolly jumper from where I had needed to bend over the rim to reach down far enough into the compost bin to retrieve the escaped rubbish.

Meditation to the Rescue

What happened this morning is evidence that my mind is over cluttered and I need to get back into the habit of doing regular meditation.

I was so engrossed in my thoughts and plans of what I need to do today, what I should have done yesterday, what I should have done a month ago! … and what I am going to need to try and get done in the coming months, that a simple job was totally screwed up. The chaos of it all!

Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was experiencing an overload of fragmented thoughts, concerns, regrets, hopes and dream catching. Does this ever happen to you?

Intimidating Workload

As much as I love exercising, I’ve not even been doing as much of that as I would like to recently.  All because my workload is huge and intimidating. I go through months of getting up around 5ish or just before, so that I can get my exercises done before the school day begins, and I LOVE how I feel afterwards, but at the moment even that is slipping because I need my sleep.

Listen to your body’s needs

And it is so important to listen to your body’s needs. So, I’m sleeping well, exercising a little and I still have a super-cluttered brain. Enter the realm of meditation….. ah, a sigh of relief and tinkly music …. Meditation works!  I have used it in the past and am looking forward to re-incorporating it into my pre-day as of now.

The power of the mind over the body

In my therapy business I cannot emphasise enough the power of the mind over the body.  With a settled mind, comes a more settled body.  We tend to take time out the least when we need it the most ….

Go with what works for you

When you delve into the world of meditation it is surprising to learn just how many different types of meditation there are, which for some, can be quite confusing and offputting – just go with what works for you.  Check out the links at the bottom of this page to help guide you in the right direction.

If you struggle to meditate then you may need it all the more…

More of us need to start to include meditation as a regular part of pre-day.  Even if you can only fit in 5 minutes in the morning before your normal routine starts, try it. I am sure that many of you already meditate, and I would love for you to share your experiences by leaving a comment in the box below.

Meditation

I have created a Quick Start Guide to Meditation and a pdf on Mantras you can use during meditation.

Please let me know how meditation has benefitted you too.  How do you meditate?
